Irmo Town Park

It was forcasted to be 79 degrees today, so after pre-school, we took a picnic lunch to the Irmo Town Park. We had never been there before, and it’s within a mile of the school. I was amazed at how many other people were there – even a lady practicing her violin.

The park has no playground, so my girls were forced to use their imaginations to find things to do. We had a great time! Elly found it great fun to lay down and roll down the hill, then sprint up the steps and do it again! Lauren liked practicing her stair-climbing, and she did really well! She also liked the big grassy steps in the amphitheater.

Elly wants to go back after her next pre-school day, but I know it’ supposed to get cooler, so we’ll see!

West Columbia Riverwalk

I’ve been wanting to get down to that park ever since it opened, and took the opportunity today after we visited the downtown library. We took a light lunch (just an apple with a pocket knife, a bag of fritos, goldfish and juice boxes).

I kept the little one in the stroller for much of the visit, because there are some steep drop-offs, and easy access to the river. Plus, it’s easier to feed her lunch when she’s confined to one spot – and the stroller has a little snack tray where I can put a handful of goldfish for her to munch on.

Each of the girls brought some of their new library books, and they enjoyed reading them at the park. Elly really liked the river, and watching the sea gulls out on the rocks. We saw a number of fishermen on the other bank, and she was asking if she could go fishing. Well, maybe some other time.

There is a large grassy area right in front of New Orleans Restaurant, and the girls had a great time running around there after lunch. Even though it was chilly today, it was a beautiful day for a picnic – we just kept our coats on.

Start ‘em young!

My in-laws have a house on Lake Monticello, so my girls are fortunate to have a great place to visit and enjoy the lake. Here are a couple pictures of my youngest, Lauren, fishing and kayaking.

New Year’s Resolutions

In addition to my normal New Year’s Resolutions, I’ve added a few this year to get my kids outside. Actually, they’re more like goals…. anyway, here they are, in no particular order:

Visit 4 SC State Parks
Visit 1 National Park
Visit 10 local parks/public green spaces
Get the girls out of the house at least 4 out of 5 weekdays
Teach Elly to swim by herself
Go camping 4 times
Get the girls to the zoo 6 times
